Digital Publishing Toolkit for the Arts and Culture

Off the Press: Electronic Publishing in the Arts
22-23 May 2014

Digital Publications are slowly ascending since a couple of years. Due to the rise of tablets and smartphones this development has accelerated and by now these publications – e-books, newspaper apps and digital magazines – are forever part of our media landscape. More and more people use mobile devices to read books and magazines and the coming years this way of information processing will dominate the market. Publishers can’t stay behind in relation to digital publishing. However, many publishers in the art- and cultural sector are unfamiliar with these developments. They do not have the knowledge, resources and capacities to develop new methods of digital publishing and participate in the digital market. Moreover, the art- and culture books have an extra challenge, because the form and content are deeply intertwined.

This RAAK-MKB project will provide the research and realization of such a platform. The following research questions is formulated: “In what way can a platform be created with new tools for open source-publishing, by which publishers in the art- and cultural sector can produce interactive e-publications by themselves?”

To answer this research question, the Institute of Network Cultures (lectortaat Netwerkcultuur) of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Knowledge center Creating 010 of the Hogeschool van Rotterdam are executing state-of-the-art research. In collaboration with an already existing consortium of eleven MKB-companies consisting of publishers, designers and developers, a fivesome subprojects will be formulated. Within these subgroups publishers, designers and developers, (research)lecturers and students of the participating applied universities will collaborate.

The result is a new developed toolkit that exists of tools for digital publishing, based on open source-software of which the source code will be published and freely accessible. As a result everyone can freely copy, adjust and distribute the tools. Five e-publications of titles of the art- and culture books fund of the participating publishers will be produced and presented on a platform that is developed for that purpose. Moreover the following manual will be created: “How to publish an e-book?” on digital publishing processes.

print club london – blisters – the sound session

Print Club London was established in 2007 and is run by managing director Fred Higginson and director Kate Higginson. The duo work closely with iconic illustrator and creative director Rose Stallard, who brings the Print Club brand to life with her inimitable 1970s fanzine-style-artwork and edgy typography.

Alongside running the studios Fred, Kate and Rose also curate an annual exhibition Blisters one of the UK’s largest poster shows, it introduces a wider demographic to affordable, original artwork, bringing a contemporary art scene to a brand new audience. Whilst providing studio space and selling work is a key focus of the studios, the trio work with clients on projects ranging from bespoke bags for Stella McCartney to live printing projects in store with Nike.

Print Club is now open for submissions and want to get the word out there to any illustrators/aspiring artists who want to take part:

This year it’s Blisters: Sound Sessions. Submit a poster in your own style inspired by your favouriteband/song/musician/tour/gig — your work must be completely new and original for this project and never seen before!

collection anarchie

Collect generally includes the systematic search, collection and retention of things or information. Anarchy is usually associated with social disorder, tyranny and lawlessness.

Which expression and content would present a publication between those two poles? This was subject of a lecture and workshop given by Prof. Lars Harmsen (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund) during the summer semester 2013. The workshop was held in Berlin (13.5. to 18.5.2013). All publications were printed on a Risograph at ¶ PILCROW Print & Publishing in Berlin.

romka magazine #6

Some photographs are more important than others. Preserved memories of people you love and friends you have lost, places that shaped your understanding of the world and events that had a significant impact on your life. romka magazine is devoted to this one print that you keep in your wallet, on the desk at work or on your fridge door. Pictures of great sentimental value that gain their quality through the personal experiences they are connected to and not through form or content. It is not about your best pictures, but about your personal favorites.

fanzines, zines, independent publications and artist books are acting as a response to the mainstream media with an activist manner. as they are a way of understanding our relation with society and even with ourselves, maybe slower but more attractive for sure.
